Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for BOAJ's services?

Our services are available to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) who are enrolled in a Pennsylvania Medicaid Waiver program — including the Consolidated Waiver and Community Living Waiver. Eligibility is determined by the PA Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) in coordination with your county's Intellectual Disability (ID) program.

What is the difference between IHCS and CPS?

In-Home and Community Support (IHCS) provides hands-on assistance primarily focused on daily living, personal care, and skill-building within the participant's home and immediate community. Community Participation Support (CPS) focuses on supporting the individual in engaging in community life outside the home — such as social activities, volunteer work, and community events. Many participants receive both services based on their individualized support plan (ISP).

How do I start a referral for someone who needs services?

Referrals can be submitted online through our Referral page or by calling our office at 412-339-7644. We accept referrals from Service Coordination Organizations (SCOs), county coordinators, families, and individuals. Please have the participant's Medicaid ID and county information available.

Does BOAJ accept all Medicaid Waiver programs?

We currently serve participants enrolled in the PA Consolidated Waiver and Community Living Waiver under the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP). Contact our office to confirm eligibility for your specific situation.

What training do BOAJ Direct Support Professionals receive?

All DSPs complete mandatory PA state-required training including orientation, Medication Administration (if applicable), First Aid/CPR, and Abuse/Neglect prevention. We also provide on-the-job mentorship, positive behavior support training, and ongoing professional development.

What areas does BOAJ serve?

BOAJ Health Care Services primarily serves Allegheny County and surrounding southwestern Pennsylvania communities. Contact us to confirm service availability in your area.

How do I apply for a job as a Direct Support Professional?

You can apply directly through our Careers page, which includes an online application form and optional resume upload. We welcome applicants with no prior DSP experience — we provide full training for the right candidates.

Is BOAJ licensed and compliant?

Yes. BOAJ Health Care Services is licensed by the Pennsylvania Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) and operates in full compliance with all applicable state and federal Medicaid Waiver regulations, including HIPAA, PA Act 57 reporting requirements, and Office of Developmental Programs incident reporting standards.
